Playroom Organization and Makeover

Kids Playroom Makeover & Organization Ideas

Y’all this kids playroom organization and makeover project was looooong overdue in the Cantu household.  Imma be reaaaaaal honest with y’all and let you know that my breaking point was when I realized I was doing waaaaay more yelling at the kids to clean up their mess than I was actually making the mess WITH them!  I was fed up with spending my time cleaning (or begging them to clean) instead of being there, present, in the moment playing with them.  I’ve heard it, felt it, and know it, but sometimes I still need to remind myself….these little years are fleeting and I want nothing more than to enjoy these few years where they actually WANT me around! (I know those teenage years are just around the corner.)  I don’t want to look back and regret the time spent worrying about the mess instead of enjoying it!

So…..for me (and us) that meant simplifying things!  Getting rid of the junk (which don’t worry we still have plenty), the things that were taking up space and rarely used.  The things that didn’t spark joy in my kids anymore but could definitely bring some to someone else.  The things that got picked up only to be put back down immediately in some other random makes-no-sense location, like inside a shoe or under a bed.  Those were the things that had to go.  So we started there.  Purging.

Before we jump in, as always, I just wanna say real quick, THANK YOU SO SO MUCH for any and all affiliate links that you may use throughout this post.  I appreciate MORE THAN YOU know when you support the brands that help to support this little blog & our little fam!!

Get Rid of What You Don’t Use

I know it can be difficult sometimes to throw away those things that you’ve watched your littles play with for years!  Try not to get too emotionally attached to the “things”, after all, they are just that.  Remember that it’s the experiences that are more important here.  Try and narrow it down to things they’re truly interested in in this stage of their life.  Things that they play with AT LEAST on a weekly basis, if not daily.  Things that make their imaginations run wild and the laughter bellow!

There were a few little things that I kept (like stuffed animals they were given during surgeries or when they were born), but if the kids don’t play with them on a regular basis, I put them in a separate Rubbermaid container that I’ll store in the attic or in the extra closet.  Somewhere close enough that if they ask for it I can access it (although they usually forget it’s even there).   I only did this with things that we had some sort of emotional attachment to though.

Before

Playroom Organization Makeover

Figuring out the layout of this room was tough because of all the windows and the large furniture/toys I had to find wall space for

Pro Tip: (Haha, kidding, just some free advice).

One of the things that really helped my kiddos with the purging was allowing them to be involved in choosing the charity/organization/foundation that we would be donating to.  It meant more to them when they knew where their stuff would be going and who they would be helping.

Spruce Up What You Already Have

So if you watched my Instagram stories then you already know I had these black Ikea shelves that were super functional but not so pretty (in my opinion…I was tired of the black).  Rather than buying new shelving, (which was unnecessary and not in the budget for this playroom organization project) I decided to just paint the existing shelves and replace some of the storage buckets to give it a new look.  The color I chose is Benjamin Moore Westcott Navy.

Playroom Paint Color

Benjamin Moore Westcott Navy

Now, speaking from experience here…you are DEFINITELY going to want to prime your shelves before you just start in on the paint.  I didn’t with the first set and the paint just scraped right off.  This specific material is already not great for holding paint, but with the amount of usage these babies get (the constant sliding of storage bins) you’re going to want to make sure you get something that will allow the paint to adhere.

After a little research I decided to go with this shellac primer.  It worked WONDERS!!  I did one coat on each shelf and was ready to go!  Full transparency here…there was still some small chipping but it wasn’t enough to bother me AND I didn’t seal the units.  Perhaps if I had sealed it then chipping wouldn’t have even happened.  Either way, I’m pleased with the result!

Once I did the single coat of shellac, I then applied 2 coats of the BM Westcott Navy.  In some spots I even had to go over it a 3rd time.  Dark paint can be tough, especially when there is white primer underneath.  If you’re a stickler, you may want to apply 3 coats here just to make sure there are no streaks.  Again, I was pleased with the result so I stuck with 2.

Paints & Primers I Used

Storage

Once the shelving was done, the rest was easy peasy.  Although I kept these gray and white storage bins, I did replace some of the plain gray ones by purchasing these larger canvas and wood ones you see on the bottom shelf, as well as the wicker baskets up on the top.  I LOVE that they add texture and that natural wood color to the space.

I also had these galvanized hanging wall planters lying around (that I intended to use forever ago and never got around to it), and instead of getting rid of them, I decided to give them a little face lift.  My plan here was to use them as a fun (and unique) way to display the 10,000 stuffed animals we have lying around our house 😂.

After the primer I added two coats of Rust-Oleum Modern Farmhouse Spray Paint in Metallic Gold.  I tried out several different gold spray paints for this project and this one had the least amount of gloss and shine and gave that kind of matte brassy look I was going for.  I LOVE it!

Unique Playroom Organization Ideas and Storage

What do we think?! Fun right?  The kids LOVED it!

Playroom Organization Ideas

Here is the wall shelf I used but I also linked some similar ones below 🙂

 Organize

Once the painting and storage plans were done it was just a matter of organizing everything.  As you can tell, I rearranged the playroom so it made a little more sense.  I also brought in more light (by not blocking windows), and created a fun little relaxation zone in the middle with the addition of a soft rug and some pillow pals!  I also brought in this graduated book display that was in my daughter’s closet and some woven baskets to hold, you guessed it, more stuffed animals!

Cubbies

Now, when it came to cubby organization, I knew I needed to do something different than I was doing before.  As hard as I tried to keep things separated and organized, my kids could never remember where to put what and it always turned into one chaotic mess!  I knew I wanted to incorporate some sort of labeling system to make things easier for the kiddos…and me, let’s be real lol.  Enter my friends from Talented Kitchen!  I worked with them for my pantry refresh several months ago and just knew they’d be able to help with my playroom organization project.

And I was right! Look how GREAT these pre-made, pre-cut, vinyl playroom labels are!!

Playroom-10Playroom-11

They come in a set of 120!  120 different labels and it includes EVERYTHING from toys to numbers, from colors to office supplies.  It was like they were made just for us and our playroom organization project! I was thrilled!  Now the kids know exactly what each storage bin holds and makes the clean up so much easier for them!  They’re even available in black font if you don’t want white.

Playroom Organization

Finishing Touches

And now for my absolute FAVORITE part of the whole playroom….the gallery wall!!

Playroom Makeover

We have pretty tall ceilings in the house and so even after putting the TV up there was still a lot of wall space above the shelves.  So I decided I wanted to get some poster sized close-ups of our little people!  They turned out even better than I had imagined!!  Would you believe that these are Walmart prints?!  So impressed!  The photos themselves are 16×20 but I had to cut them down to fit in these 14×18 frames.

And that’s pretty much it!  Even though this playroom organization project wasn’t HUGE, it was definitely time consuming.  Lots of planning and strategizing but man, it sure feels good to have it done!  And now the kids enjoying being in their playroom so much more!  They’re not overwhelmed and keeping the mess under control is so much easier!!! Win win!

Back To School Sales For The Whole Fam!

Hi Friends!

Okay I did it!  I put together a Back to School Sales roundup for those of you who still have shopping to do before our favorite little people (or our once little but now big people) head back out to learn some things.  I decided not to include actual school supplies (pencils, pens, markers, etc.) because I think most of that is pretty self explanatory.  Instead, I tried to focus more on clothing, shoes, larger supplies (backpacks, lunchboxes, etc.), and dorm goodies.

Please note that a lot of these Back To School Sales have expiration dates so you better snag what you need before time runs out!

Home Design Selections for The New House

If you’ve ever built or designed a new home, you know there’s a TON of decision making that goes into it!  Like, a ton!!  If you’re indecisive like me, it can get to be a little overwhelming.  The funny thing is, I always know what I DON’T like, but sometimes it’s hard for me to decide between things that I DO like.  That said, the more options I have, the harder it is to nail down my final selection.  Soooo….it’ll probably make sense to you when I say that I spent a total of 12 HOURS at the Drees Design Center finalizing all our color and design options for the new home we’re building.  If it wasn’t for their super helpful designers I’d probably still be there right now 😂😂.

The other day I asked you guys on Instagram to submit any questions you have about the house or the build process, and as promised, I’m going to answer them here for y’all.  So here it goes! Continue reading

How to Shop for the Best and Most Affordable Farmhouse Rugs on Amazon

The Best Farmhouse Rugs on Amazon, & Tips for Finding The Perfect Rug for YOU!!

Rugs.  I’m not gonna lie y’all.  When it comes to rugs…I always drop the ball!  Not because I don’t know how to pick ’em, but because they’re always the LAST thing I think of when it comes to home decor.  I am so ashamed to say I have like 3 rugs in my house right now!  I know.  It’s basically a crime.  We have so much wood floor in our house and I only have, MAYBE, 5% of it covered.  No wonder my house is cold and my feet always hurt, lol 😂.

Seriously though, I’ve been searching high and low for rugs over these last few weeks and was THRILLED to see that Amazon not only has GREAT options, but they’re SUPER affordable too!!  And because I liked what I saw while I was perusing the infinite webspace that is The Amazon Marketplace (seriously, they have SO MUCH STUFF), I decided it might be helpful to go ahead and round-up my absolute fave farmhouse-style finds to share them with you guys as well!!

Affordable & AWESOME Faux Floral Finds From T.J.Maxx

Who out there is ready for spring?? 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️

Well, as ready as I am, I can tell you it’s absolutely no where in sight for those of us here in the Chicagoland area.  But, rather than wish away the weeks, I’m actually soaking up these beautiful snow covered views we’ve had the last few days/weeks.  Y’all, I’ve never seen snow so glittery!!  It literally looks like billions of diamonds covering the ground and trees.  It’s absolutely breathtaking.

All that said, I’m still lookin forward to the warmer temps, bright colors, and sweet sweet smells of spring.

I’ve already started brainstorming the aesthetic I’m going for this spring, and while doing that, a light bulb went off! Y’all are always asking me where I get my faux greenery and floral, so as I was shopping around for my spring inspiration, I thought I’d throw a blog post together for y’all to share some of my favorite affordable floral finds!! And the truth is, even though I found these items while brainstorming my spring design plan, most (if not all) of these items would work very nicely for ANY season!! Y’all know I love versatility in my decor!! So the fact that this collection of faux floral and greenery could work all year-round is just an added bonus!!

Because I know the cost of floral and greenery can add up, I made sure to only add items that were super affordable—and where do you think I went to look for these goodies?!  T.J. Maxx of course!!! (No, this is NOT sponsored, I just love that their decor is so fairly priced, super on trend, and AVAILABLE ONLINE!!  I’m a fan of shopping from my couch if you couldn’t tell, lol.

EC Life Planner to stay organized in the new year

Getting & Staying Organized in 2019

And just like that the first three weeks of the new year are already over!  I seriously can’t believe it!  Although, for us, Weeks 1, 2, & 3  were spent recovering from a wicked stomach bug, strep, and scarlet fever;  so that could be why it was kind of a blur…my memory must be trying to just block it out. 😂

Anywho, Week 4, I see you!  And this week has been dedicated to preparing & planning for 2019! If you’ve followed me on Instagram for awhile, then you already know I’m a planner.  And a list maker.  And an all around control freak (but that’s neither here nor there).  Well, my Holy Grail of planning & staying on track is my Erin Condren Life Planner.

Easy Neutral Holiday Tablescape

One of my FAVORITE things to decorate for the holidays (or any season really) is my dining room table!  There’s just something about tablescapes that make me feel all warm & fuzzy!  Whether I’m hosting for Christmas or not, I still love to dress up my table.  Just makes the whole room feel so warm & magical!!

This year, when I was planning our table setup in my head, greens and garlands just kept poppin’ in there.  So I went with it!  That became the mental (and literal) centerpiece with which I designed everything around.  Now, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel here!  If you plan to replicate or pull inspiration from what I’m about to show, FEEL FREE TO USE WHATEVER GARLANDS YOU ALREADY HAVE!!  No need to go buy more, trust me, I know how expensive they can be!  Just use whatever you have lying around!  And if it’s not full enough or “interesting” enough for you.  I’ll show you some ways to dress it up, without breaking the bank! 😉  That’s actually exactly what I did with mine.

Cute & Casual Holiday Outfits {Plus Great Suggestions for the Fam}

Any of you guys already planning (or trying to plan) your holiday outfits?? 🙋🏻🙋🏻  My excuse is that I’m traveling for the holidays so I’ll have to plan & pack in advance. 😆

But even if that weren’t the case, I’m sure I’d still be franticly searching Pinterest for ideas.  Lol.  I do it every year!

I noticed, while exercising my thumbs on the Pinterest search page, however, that most of what I was finding was a little too dressy for what I’m going for.  Don’t get me wrong…I love a good sequins skirt as much as the next girl, but for our family Christmas, I thought that might be a bit much.

So…I thought some of you might be in that same pickle; looking for some holiday outfit inspo that’s a little more casual, still cute, and can be dressed up or down depending on your choice of accessories.  So, if that’s you, then read on Sister! Continue reading

Fall Capsule Wardrobe Ideas: 1 Outfit, 8 Ways

Alright guys.  Today we’re talking simplicity in our wardrobes.

Capsule wardrobes, for those who may be new to them, are all about keeping things simple.  The basic principles are: only have things in your closet that you love, that fit you NOW, and that can generally be paired with anything else in your closet.

You’ll notice that capsules typically consist of lots of basic neutrals with just pops of patterns & colors sprinkled in here and there.  This allows you to mix & match virtually your whole closet without having to spend too much money!  It also makes getting dressed in the morning WAY easier!  Gone are the days of standing in your closet staring for 20 minutes before you just start trying on absolutely anything that will fit!  If you’ve kept up with your capsule, everything fits!

Now even though the idea of a capsule is to keep it simple , every once in a while, it may be helpful to do a little refresh that brings us back into the appropriate style decade (although, if you held on to things long enough, some of your wardrobe choices from the early 90s may very well be back in style right now, lol). The goal of a style refresh is to just add a few key pieces that will update your look but still allow you to continue wearing most of what you already have in your closet.

So, to help you guys visualize what I mean, I put this little style session together for y’all.  This fall I shopped around to see what looks were “trending”, what out of those looks I actually liked, what was “me”, and what would easily fit into my existing capsule.  This is what I came up with!

IMG_6170

1 Outfit, 8 Different Ways

Basic Outfit 1

White Jeans, Plaid Flannel Top, Boots

By incorporating one or two additional pieces from my closet, I was able to create 7 more looks that spun off the first original outfit.

Some of the pieces you see here are brand new (they’re the items I bought as part of my fall refresh), and some I’ve had for a while.  I wanted to show you guys here that even with one basic outfit, you can create so many different looks!  You can layer it, add color, change a sweater or a jacket, wear it with different shoes, make subtle changes that not only change the look, but allow you to get the most out of your wardrobe (and your wallet)!  It’s about being smart with your choices when you’re shopping.

Tip: When you are out shopping, before you buy something, think to yourself, “Can I wear this with at least 5 other things I already own in my closet?”  It’s a good way to just make sure that you’re staying true to your capsule’s “theme”, if you will.

I really like the way my capsule came together for fall!! The colors I added in are “in style” & trending, but I of course made a point to stay true to myself & my style! ☺️  The outfits above have been some of my go-to’s this season!  I’m loving the chunky sweater look; especially when you can incorporate a fun plaid in there!  In Chicago, layers are a must so I nearly always have a cardigan handy too!  Again, the point is to you use items you already own to put together some different looks.   But, if for some reason you don’t own some of these staples, or you’re still working on putting together a capsule for the first time, just make sure you’re thinking ahead as you buy.  Get a visual, (kinda like the series I put together above) to help you decided which pieces will make the biggest impact & give you the biggest return.  Can you see several different outfits coming together just by adding one piece?  Or do you need to add a few of the basic staples to allow you to create the looks?  Whatever the answer, just make sure you’re planning things out to help you stay on track!

Well, hopefully y’all found this helpful!  Let me know in the comments below if you guys want to see more of these types of posts!  What are some tips/tricks you guys use to stay on track with your capsule? I’d love to know!!

Talk soon friends!

I don’t know exactly what it is about fall, but something about its arrival makes me want to decorate my house like I’m living in my own little personal Hobby Lobby! 😂 I’m talking hours of arranging & rearranging & figuring out where to put my 1,500 fall signs,  350,000 pumpkins, & 2.5 TONS of faux floral.  Okay, maybe those numbers are slightly exaggerated (although if you ask my husband he’ll probably say they’re “dead-on-balls-accurate”— My Cousin Vinnie anyone??).  The point is, I’m obsessed with this time of year, and pretty much remain in design-mode until early January.  Sounds exhausting right? Well it can be, but I LOVE it!

Now, because I know not everyone goes all-out crazy like me, I decided to break up the fall blog posts into smaller (& less overwhelming 😂) chunks.  So, last week I shared my Fall Tablescape, today we’re talking about Fall Signs; & coming soon, I’ll be sharing a fun Fall Round-Up (basically some simple & affordable ways to bring autumn indoors).  Then, after that, we’ll be talking Halloween Table Ideas! So stay tuned for those.

Okay, so on to the main event! Fall Signs!

Tiered Tray Styling 101

Tiered Tray Styling 101

So the two most common questions I get (outside of “Will you please come decorate my house?” ← huge compliment when y’all ask me that btw) are around styling tiered trays & styling shelves.  So, while I was doing a product shoot for one of our trays the other day, I had an idea to put a blog post together with my tiered tray styling methods.  I figured this way y’all could just refer back to it anytime you need it! ❤️

Tiered trays…super on trend these days as far as farmhouse decor goes.  The great thing about them is, if they don’t look super cute, nobody really cares 😂 (it’s not like you’ll get criticized for having an ugly tiered tray), lol.  BUT…if they’re done well, PEOPLE LOVE THEM!!! They can add such fun, flair, & personality to your space & they’re awesome for parties & entertaining! (Here are a few shots of trays I’ve styled in the past)

Weekly Steals — August Week 3

Hey hey Friends!!  It’s here!  Your Weekly Steals for August Week 3!

It’s the last Monday before school starts for this crazy crew.  My kids are so excited!!  I’m dreading it!  I don’t really know why exactly.  It may be because both my kids get incredibly anxious and cry anytime they have to be somewhere new without out us.  There are so many new things they’re going to be exposed to: new schools, new buses, a new house, new teachers, new new new new.  I think I’m nervous about how they’re going to adjust, how they’ll be treated, if they’ll be happy…you know, all the “mom” things.  That, plus I hate setting my alarm.  Haha.  That’s the selfish part.  Anyway!! I know many of you have started this week or will be starting soon, so good luck to all of you and your littles!!
